Heading West through the Kimberleys - Blog9

Darwin to WA on sealed road has you heading south back to Katherine where the Stuart and west bound Victoria Highways meet. The 810 Km trip from Darwin to Kununurra was a first for us and we were looking forward to what changes in scenery and services we would encounter. There were many such changes, all for the better, one of which was gaining 1 1/2 hrs passing a line on a map.

Scenery through the NT & WA Kimberley's is far from the often perceived flat, featureless terrain. Geographical features of all shapes and sizes are as constant as the varied flora that is encountered.

Water thirsty cotton
But lots of water - Ord River spillway
The infamous 'Laverton Crossing'

Lake Argyle

A highlight of our stay at Kununurra  was the 1hr's drive to Lake Argyle, created in the early 1960's with the construction of a dam to capture the waters of the Ord River to benefit and expand agriculture. To experience the vastness of this 'Sydney Harbour' multiplied 19 times when 100% full, only 16 times the day we visited, we took a 3 hr lunch cruise on the lake.

Kununurra and Lake Argyle was well worth the visit and just one of many highlights we had experienced up until then. There are many more to come!
